Nearly 4,000 acres of open and wooded land in Pasquotank County - once part of a prominent local family farm - goes to auction today.

The land will be sold in tracts ranging from 21 acres to 378 acres during the auction beginning at 1 p.m. at the Kermit E. White Center at Elizabeth City State University.

More than 2,700 acres is cleared, tillable land that has been productive in corn, wheat and soybeans.

"It's very rare to see this much quality farmland for sale at auction, especially in the Southeast," said Joe Bubon, executive vice president of Illinois-based auction company Murray Wise Associates, in a news release.

Tanglewood Farms owner James Winslow declared bankruptcy in August. The prominent complex of grain bins visible on U.S. 17 south of Elizabeth City are now owned by Purdue AgriBusiness.

In 2003, more than 6,000 acres of the farm was put on the market as a megasite for industrial, commercial and residential development, including a golf course, but only a part of the site was sold.
